Yahoo
E-mail Group Information
St
Timothy Council Yahoo E-mail Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/St_Timothy_Council/
This
is how our Council Yahoo Email Group works. If possible, please
print this out and save it for future reference. More detail
follows below this short letter.
The Yahoo Group
is used primarily for the distribution of e-mails to members of the
council.
-
Any member of our Council may join.
-
If you have a Yahoo ID established, you can also access the
online part of the Council Yahoo website (link is below). This
allows you to download our Council Newsletter, for example. The
Newsletter is available on our council web site.
-
If you wish to post a message, use the address shown below. The
Board is moderated and the Grand Knight and his moderators
reserve the right to edit any post for brevity, etc.
-
The Grand Knight has established guidelines as to what can go
out. Sick notices, changes in Degrees, cancellations of events,
etc. are all to be posted automatically.
-
ALL sick notices, death notices or requests for prayers will be
sent on immediately. However, please obtain the permission of
the person who is ill or a family before posting any
specifics. It is one thing to ask for prayers for Brother A
because he is very ill or he suddenly became ill. It is
another to go into specifics as to the cause or severity.
Not every family wants this information disseminated! I have
had to edit this information out when I thought it was too
specific. This is a privacy issue!
More details on
the Yahoo Groups follow. Note that there are other Yahoo Groups
such Groups for the Maryland State Council, Baltimore Chapter,
McNamara Chapter, Seton Chapter, Master of the Maryland District of
the 4th Degree and a Group dedicated solely to Pro Life
matters. ALL KNIGHTS ARE INVITED TO JOIN ANY OR ALL OF THESE.
St
Timothy Council Yahoo Group Mailing List Tutorial
The purpose of
this tutorial is to get new members familiar with our Council’s
Yahoo mailing list. Our Council’s mailing list was set up to
disseminate news and critical information. All members of our
Council are encouraged to subscribe to the mailing list in order to
be reminded about Program information, Degree schedule changes, sick
notices and other news related to our group. If you belong to
other mailing groups on Yahoo! then most of the information in this
tutorial should be very familiar.
Subscribing to
Our Council’s mailing list
To subscribe to
our Council’s mailing list, log onto the Internet, bring up a
browser and go to or type in the internet URL (universal resource
locator) address:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/St_Timothy_Council/
In the main page
you will see:

If you have an
existing Yahoo ID, enter it now. Otherwise proceed to "sign up
now" to establish a new Yahoo ID!
Creating
a Yahoo! Account
Creating a
Yahoo! account is easy. Enter in a Yahoo! ID name. You might have to
be creative since Yahoo! IDs need to be unique. For example you can
append numbers to a common name. BTW, if you chose a Yahoo! ID that
is already taken, Yahoo! will recommend alternate IDs. Next, enter
in a password for this account. Make sure you use a good password
that is hard to guess and at least 8 characters long. If you must
write down the password because you might forget it, write it down
in a secure location. Yahoo! also provides a hint feature in case
you forget your password.
You will be
given the choice between using an alternate email address or setting
up a new Yahoo! email account. Choose the option that will give you
the best chance to see our COUNCIL-related messages. For most
people, this means entering the email of their Internet Service
Provider. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE OR CREATE A NEW YAHOO EMAIL
ACCOUNT.
Yahoo! will ask
you other questions during the new user registration process. We
suggest you provide the least amount of information possible.
Also, be sure NOT to accept the free emails on various interests so
your name is not added to current mailing lists. Comments are
needed so we know what Council to which you belong and your current
position within the Council.
After you create
the user account, you will be asked to verify the “alternate” email
account you have entered in the previous step. Enter in the
Email Confirmation Code sent to your email and the Yahoo!
password you created in the Email Verification page.
Before you can
subscribe to our Council mailing list, Yahoo! will ask you to set
your message delivery preferences. The choices include:
Individual
emails:
to send individual email messages
Daily digest:
to send many emails in one message
Only special
notices:
to only send me important emails from the group moderator.
No email:
to don't send me email, I'll read the messages at the Web site
The best option
for this group might be to choose Individual emails as you
will get reminders on upcoming events.
In the Message
format section, you have two choices:
- Convert to
HTML. Convert plain-text messages sent to me to HTML.
- Do not convert
to HTML. Don't change the format of messages sent to me.
Most users might
select Convert to HTML, unless their email cannot properly
display HTML messages. I use Text messages to keep images sent to
me at a minimum.
Once you set
your preferences, select the join button and you are now a
pending member of our Council group. Once the notice is sent
to the moderators, they will check to see if the user is a K of C
member (they usually get this information from the “comments
section”) and approve it automatically.
Getting the most
from our Council group
For the most
part, interaction with our COUNCIL group will just involve receiving
emails (see below).
However, when

the left side of the screen will be the menu bar. Each section is
